Director of the institute for Global Dialogue in South Africa Dr Siphamandla Zondi says the way the green economy is being defined by co operations is not actual green but just adding the green to the brown economy.
He said at the moment those who are talking about the green economy the ones who are benefiting from it because there is profit attached. Dr Zondi mentioned mining and crude oil extraction as some of the many examples of the brown economy which the western world wants to add some green to it.
He said the green economy should be defined as being based on respect of the people and the planet or exploiting the planet in a manner which is sustainable with the view of replenishing it and then to promote social justice afterwards.
He said the green agenda is more into the politics of conditionality therefore every aid they provide they want to make a case for this green economy. Dr Zondi said that all this dislocates the agenda for Africa which is an agenda for social justice and reduction of poverty.
He put the blame on Africans for not defining what they want but to let others define it in the manner that benefits them. He said Africa should not be caught up in the green agenda which will be green for the western world but brown for Africa and at the expense of social justice. Dr. Zondi said green economy is not an alternative to social justice but it is integrated to social justice, he said Africa has always coped with its problems and found right answers without sacrificing social justice. He was speaking in an exclusive interview with flamme da Afrique at the peoples summit in Rio de janeiro Brazil.
